“Reading Melinda Rainey Thompson’s SWAG is like sitting on Granny’s porch swing eating a piece of pound cake with a sleeping cat wrapped around your ankles. You feel full, warm, and, most of all, grateful to be a Southerner.”
Celia Rivenbark, author of We’re Just Like You, Only Prettier
“I received a copy of this book from the publisher and was delighted to see it was written by someone from my hometown (Greenville, Ala.) Melinda Rainey Thompson. I was even more delighted when I actually read the book. It is full of the warmth, sentiment and wry humor of the South I know and love. As a Lifestyles writer for a small-town paper, I get a lot of preview copies of books. Frankly, some of them I never finish or even start.
Definitely not the case with Melinda's book. One of the great aspects of this collection is you can browse throughout the book and read an essay here or there as time allows . . . keep it on your bed stand at night, in the car to read while waiting in line at the drive-thru, etc. While this is a humorous book (with the author constantly poking fun at herself) there are also some very touching moments, too. You don't have to be a Southern woman to enjoy this, either. Some things like motherhood and trying on bathing suits are just universal! Melinda and I have never met but we have chatted via phone, and it was like we were old friends. You'll feel that way when you read her book. Well recommended and suitable for all ages (no R-rated humor here).”
Angela K. Long, The Greenville Advocate (AL)
SWAG started as a lark when Melinda Rainey Thompson began a monthly mailing of her humorous essays about ordinary events from a Southern woman's perspective. Over several years, her subscription list grew to nearly 5,000 people in 28 states. Ranging from swimsuit shopping to squirrel battling, from magnolia theft to cemetery etiquette, Melinda Rainey Thompson’s delightful essays and clever lists reflect the everyday peculiarities of life in the South.
Ten Ways to Know if You’re a SWAG
You feel the urge to bake a pound cake after reading the obituaries.
You have had professional photographs made of your children barefoot and dressed in their Sunday clothes.
You’d rather have a fight with your husband than with your best friend.
You have stolen magnolia leaves, or you know someone who has.
You have monogrammed the middle of your shower curtain.
You could live without Yankees who equate your Southern accent with a low IQ.
You know better than to eat the potato salad at a family reunion.
You are socially conditioned to believe that tanned fat looks better than white fat.
Your children hide their Easter baskets and Valentine’s Day candy from you just in case you have a dieting lapse.
You believe that cocktail dresses do not double as church clothes

I loved this book, after Gone with the Wind, I have always wanted to live South of the Mason-Dixie line and one day I will. Each chapter is a gem on its own, but I confess to wanting to hear more about the over 50 age group and not the youngish Mummy crowd.
That said, I am thrilled that the misleading title caused me to read and enjoy.

SWAG Southern Women Aging Gracefully edition by Melinda Rainey Thompson Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
Bought one for my wife and each of my three daughters....after all....they are "Southern Women"!
If you grew up in the South; are over 40 and have started to forget your breeding - buy this book immediately! While I'm a Virginian I found this book to still be the most entertaining thing I'd read in a very long time. I haven't lived in the South unfortunately for over 30 years and in fact have lived in Australia for the past 20 but before finishing the first essay my accent was back and I had a glass of sweet tea in progress. I am married to a Yankee so marked several essays that he needed to read - his reaction was that after 20+ years together he now understood some of my "peculiarities" I laughed so hard I had to keep my asthma inhaler nearby every time I picked up the book! The best recommendation I can give is that I've ordered Melinda's other two books and that I had planned to send this on to my sister but will have to buy her another one - I need to keep this one!
I enjoyed this book so much because I can really relate to all of her situations. Growing up in Mississippi and spending a lot of visiting time in all of our other Southern states, I have so much love and respect for our traditions and habits that others might not appreciate. Melinda portrays the predicaments of our Southern Ladies so genuinely and in such a comedic style. I'm looking forward to reading all of her other books.
What a delightful book of short essays. I grew up in the mid west (Missouri) but I think I have southern roots. I could see my grandmother and some of her friends in many of these stories. I loved the red lipstick story. If you want an easy read that will make you and even say "oh that's why they do that?" this is the book for you.
It was OK. Not as funny as I expected. If I had small children and I was in my 30's to 40's, maybe I would have related better to the stories.
I thought it would be more about southern women in their menopause years.
I bought this book for my best friend's birthday. But she got a used book, because I read it first! It is a humorous look at growing older gracefully. We can't fight it, so we might as well laugh at it. I loved the book, and my friend did, too. Buy the book, especially if you are Southern... because no one understands southern women like, well, southern women!
That pretty much says it all, doesn't it? I sent this book last week to my cousin in North Carolina who flew to California for my father's funeral with a poundcake in her purse. Us Californians thought that was a bit nutty, but my husband, who is from the south, laughed until he cried and said, "You didn't expect a southern lady to show up empty handed now, did you?"
My cousin called yesterday to thank me for the book and said it had been the highlight of her day.
I'm sure I'll be buying this book a few more times...
I loved this book, after Gone with the Wind, I have always wanted to live South of the Mason-Dixie line and one day I will.
Each chapter is a gem on its own, but I confess to wanting to hear more about the over 50 age group and not the youngish Mummy crowd.
